Respectful Screening

Screening That Builds Trust, Not Fear

Substance use screening during pregnancy and postpartum can feel threatening to patients — especially those who fear judgment, stigma, or legal consequences. How screening is conducted matters as much as whether it is conducted.

These resources help clinical teams approach screening in ways that are trauma-informed, transparent, and centered on the patient’s wellbeing.

Respectful screening means explaining why you’re asking, what will happen with the information, and giving patients a voice in their own care.
