The purpose of this media kit is to make highlights from the "Thaen's Journey to Motherhood" video accessible to amplification partners, so they can participate in the conversation about the vital role patient-provider partnership can play and make the case for including patients at relevant decision-making tables.

Key Messages

  • Leading causes of death for non-Hispanic Black women, include: cardiovascular conditions, cardiomyopathy, preeclampsia, and eclampsia (hypertensive disorders of pregnancy) [Source: AJMC 2020]
  • Black women experience severe maternal morbidity events at a rate 2.1 times greater than white women [Source: AJMC 2020]
  • Black infants make up 15% of all new births in the U.S., but 29% of all deaths [Source: AJMC 2020]
  • Postpartum cardiomyopathy was the leading overall cause of late maternal deaths with Black women having a six-times-higher risk than white women [Source NIH 2021]
  • A strong patient-provider relationship is critical to improving maternal health for Black moms, which starts with hearing their concerns, questions, and history.
